Your Host
An award-winning Olive ridley turtle conservationist, Bichitrananda Biswal who is fondly called Bichi bhai, is our dearest member at Camp Bichi.
His is a story of absolute inspiration, and determination. He dropped out of school at the age of 10 and dedicated his entire life to turtle conservation in Odisha's Astaranga. Even today, you will find him in his simple get up with a smile on his face, walking the length of the beach, scanning for troubles, and saving any turtle coming ashore.
Olive Ridley Turtle
One of the many prides of Odisha, and also the mascot of all major sports events in the state, an Olive Ridley Turtle, or Lepidochelys olivacea, is the smallest and most abundant of all sea turtle. They grow up to 70 cm and weigh upto 45 kilograms on an average. Its carapace, heart-shaped, is olive green hence the name. Male and female, both, grow same size but females have a more round-shaped carapace.
Odisha is popular for being one of the major sites across the globe, to host thousands of these creatures every year during their nesting season.
A Tale Ashore
Odisha coast is very favourable for these sea turtles. Criss-crossed by estuary, rivers, creeks, and creek lets, Land inundated by the saline and sweet water and covered with mangroves, Estuaries are popular for being the breeding and spawning grounds for several fishes, prawns, crabs and mollusks.
The river mouth becomes the feeding ground of the sea turtles, which migrate over large distances in the sea to feed and nesting. About 50% of the world’s total population and 90% of India’s population of sea turtles come every year for the mass nesting.
