Earth Day: Save The Planet While You Travel!

Being a traveller comes with its own set of challenges, especially if you are a climate conscious human with a lot of concern for the planet. We have created a list of ways for you to travel sustainably, responsibly, and planet-consciously. Let's celebrate the Earth, and travel in a manner that nurtures the planet, and does not destroy it.

GO FOR CARBON FREE TRANSPORTATION

In general, the less distance you travel from home, the lower your carbon footprint. Self-propelled modes of transportation are not only good for you, but also for the environment. They are an excellent way to exercise while also reducing your carbon footprint. Walking, cycling, and kayaking are all excellent ways to slow down and immerse yourself in the area you are visiting with minimal impact.

AVOID USING PLASTIC

Single-use plastic bottles are well known to be a problem for our planet, especially in countries where recycling systems do not exist. Single-use bottles are a significant source of tourism-related plastic pollution, contributing to the nearly 11 million metric tonnes of plastic pollution dumped into the oceans each year.

Use reusable and refillable bottles made of glass, silicone, steel or if you're going to a place where you are not sure with the quality of water, consider investing in a water purifying system or tablets. Bring reusable utensils, tote bags, containers, and straws to avoid single-use plastic while shopping or eating out.

SUPPORT THE LOCALS

Travellers should be aware of where their money is going and ensure that it is going to locals and benefiting the local community. Seeking out local experiences such as homestays and hiring local guides is the best way to learn about a new culture while also ensuring that your money directly benefits the local economy.

Travellers should eat locally and dine in restaurants that use local ingredients to support businesses that employ locals. Visit a local market instead, it's a great way to meet locals while also enjoying the local delights. Buying handmade souvenirs and art made by indigenous artisans can help preserve authentic cultural heritage while also providing employment.

LOCAL CULTURE AND TRADITION MUST BE RESPECTED

Travelling allows you to learn about and celebrate different cultures. As a result, it's important to respect and celebrate traditions as well as cultural norms that may affect dress code, language, food etiquette, and general behaviour. So, before you travel, do some research on a destination's culture and traditions; this will not only help you connect with the place, but will also help you honour the local customs.

Many gestures have different meanings in different cultures; before visiting religious and cultural sites, learn what's appropriate from locals. When visiting heritage sites, be mindful not to touch artefacts and go during off-peak hours to offset any strain on over-tourism and potential infrastructure shortages.

ALWAYS TRY TO GIVE BACK

If you want to give back, make sure your contribution is making a difference and helping the local community while you are travelling. This can be as simple as picking up a piece of litter in the park or volunteering for a beach clean up. If you're planning a trip with the primary goal of volunteering, make sure the organisation has strong ties to the host community and isn't displacing locals. You can also donate money or goods through a reputable organisation instead of joining volunteer groups such as cleanup events.

You can also support local nonprofits that fund the specific destination you're visiting, or global nonprofits that help on a global scale and focus on using tourism to advance conservation and combat human welfare issues.

RESPECT THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF THE PLACE

Travellers have a tremendous opportunity to protect our planet's natural environment and resources. Do your research and stay informed about the issues affecting the environments you visit to better understand how you can assist. These rules and regulations exist to safeguard the environment, wildlife, local communities, and you.

These rules and regulations are there for a reason, usually to help preserve the surrounding environment and keep native flora safe. Take only what you brought in and leave nothing behind. For your own safety and the safety of the animals, keep your distance from wildlife and never feed or touch wild animals. In beach areas, use reef-safe sunscreen free of oxybenzone and octinoxate, and never step on coral or stir up sediment which can also cause damage to the ecosystem.

TAKE A TRIP CLOSER TO THE NATURE

If you want to gain a better understanding and appreciation for the natural world, try going on a trip solely for the purpose of connecting with nature. Do something that connects you to the world in a way that sitting at home with all the electricity and running water does not, such as camping or hiking.
